Blepharoplasty Iowa

Your eyes are often the first feature of your appearance to make an impression on others. Unfortunately, eyelids are especially vulnerable to the signs of aging. Drooping, puffiness and a sleepy appearance can impact the look of the eyes and have a dramatic effect on your overall impression.

With blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) in Dubuque, you can turn back the clock and refresh your youthfulness. Dr. Givens treats symptoms of age on the eyelids by rejuvenating your contours. The blepharoplasty procedure is a safe, surgical option that gives you long-term results for an alert appeal.

Since there are many different reasons for patients to undergo eyelid surgery, the specific method used can vary. Lower eyelids may require surgery if excess skin, fine wrinkles, or puffy bags appear underneath the eyes. In certain cases blepharoplasty is used on people who want a more defined upper eyelid crease. Surgery can also repair puffiness on and around the upper eyelids.

Eyelid surgeries are usually performed under local anesthesia, so Dr. Givenscan assess the symmetry of your eyes during surgery. Individually, the procedures take about 30 to 45 minutes to perform. Upper and lower eyelid surgery with laser skin resurfacing takes about 90 minutes in total. Stitches will be placed for upper blepharoplasty and ptosis surgery. These are usually outpatient procedures, meaning you will go home the same day.

Your eyes will be swollen after surgery, but most swelling is gone after one month. Stitches will dissolve on their own. If non-dissolvable stitches are placed, they will be removed after one week. Dr. Givens will see you for one or more follow-up visits to ensure you are healing in a timely fashion.

Will eyelid surgery impacy my vision?

In patients with severe cases, excess eyelid skin can partially obscure a patient’s vision. For these patients, eyelid rejuvenation may improve their field of vision, but for most patients there is no change in vision after the surgery.

Will my eyelid surgery look natural?

Dr. Givens has extensive experience with blepharoplasty. During eyelid surgery, Dr. Givens will remove the extra skin and fat from your eyelids while taking great care to leave just the right amount of fat behind to give you a full youthful look.

Who is a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

You may be a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery in Dubuque if you have: Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of your upper eyelid Extra skin hanging from the upper eyelids over the eyelashes (possibly impairing your line of sight) Puffy upper and/or lower eyelids Bags/dark circles under the eyes Thin, wrinkled, “crepe paper-”like skin around the lower eyelids

What is the purpose of blepharoplasty?

Eyelid surgery in Dubuque at Faces Medspa can correct drooping upper lids which can hang down and interfere with peripheral vision. By removing the excess wrinkled skin, blepharoplasty “opens up” the eyes and gives the face a fresher, brighter, and more youthful and rested appearance. During lower eyelid surgery, bulging fat is removed, as well as a minimal amount of skin. Thus blepharoplasty procedure improves over-hanging eyelid skin in the upper lids and removes the puffiness and swelling of the lower eyelids.

How do you decide if I need an upper eyelid lift or a brow lift?

When someone complains of the appearance of the upper eyelids, the first thing Dr. Givens does is evaluate whether the problem is excess skin in the upper eyelids, or if the eyebrows have lowered in position over time. If the eyebrows are in good position, then Dr. Givens can perform the upper eyelid surgery to remove the excess skin. If the eyebrows are particularly low, he surgically raises the patient’s forehead skin an appropriate level. If most of the upper eyelid skin disappears, a patient would most likely benefit from a forehead lift.

Is there scarring from eyelid surgery?

Most of the time there is no visible scar after the healing is complete. Dr. Givens makes incisions in the eyelids following natural skin folds and creases. If you have pierced ears that are now closed shut, the way you healed is a good indication of how you will heal from facial plastic surgery. Scars on the rest of the body typically are not an indication for how patients heal. At the time of your consultation, it’s important to show Dr. Givens any previous scars that are of concern so he can give you a realistic assessment of your healing potential following surgery.

Will I be in pain after eyelid surgery?

After any surgical procedure, some discomfort can be expected. Most patients are provided with prescriptions for medication. Patients have surprisingly little discomfort after most eyelid procedures. Generally over the counter Tylenol is all patients need (with consistent icing).

What is the healing time following eyelid surgery?

Usually, patients look normal after about two to three weeks post-surgery. Some patients heal faster, and others take longer. The crease is high just after surgery, and gets lower as the swelling resolves. You will look better at six weeks and even better still at six months.
