LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Our Dubuque Medspa utilizes a diode laser which is far more stable and uniform than other laser wavelengths used for hair removal. This results in a system that has safer and more effective results. It even has a powerful chilled tip cooling system to minimize pain and reduce the risk of burning.

Laser hair removal at Faces Medspa provides an effective, affordable, and long-lasting permanent solution for reducing unwanted hair on virtually all parts of the body. Stop spending countless hours grooming with traditional hair removal methods and say goodbye to your unwanted hair once and for all with laser hair removal.

THE STAGES OF HAIR GROWTH

A hair in the active growth or "Anagen" phase of growth has unique properties. These physical characteristics make the hair follicle extremely vulnerable to the laser. All hair containing melanin will absorb the laser beam, but only those in the active phase of growth are susceptible to being permanently destroyed. To understand exactly how laser hair removal works and why more than one treatment session is needed, it is important to know the three growth cycles of hair:

Anagen Phase: Also known as the growth phase, this stage of hair growth typically takes 3-5 years and determines hair length.

Catagen Phase: During this transitional phase, which lasts approximately 10 days or so, the hair follicle begins to shrink and hair prepares to shed.

Telogen Phase: The resting phase is the final stage of hair growth, lasting anywhere between 2-4 months and characterized by gradual hair shedding.

Remember, laser hair removal only works on hair during the active growth phase. This means patients usually need to undergo multiple hair removal treatment sessions, spaced 5-8 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.

THE LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT

The hair in the treatment area will be trimmed or shaved as close to the skin’s surface as possible. The laser is adjusted to the proper setting for the skin color, as well as the location, and thickness of the hair. The skin will be protected with a cooling device or cold gel, and the eyes will be protected with appropriate eyewear. All make-up, sunscreen, and aftershave are completely rinsed off.

A pulse of light is given to the area. The light passes through the skin to the hair follicle, damaging it and inhibiting future hair growth. This is done without damaging the skin. Laser hair removal is well-tolerated, but some patients feel a bit of a sting.

After your laser hair removal treatment, you may be some slight redness for a few hours following treatment. Mild discomfort may be experienced but is easily managed. A soothing cream may be recommended by your Faces Medspa laser technician. The use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) daily after treatment with reapplication is essential.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can get laser hair removal?

Think about how sunlight is attracted to darker clothing. That’s kind of how our lasers work. The laser’s energy is attracted to the pigment of the hair. Which means Laser Hair Removal works best on skin with a fair complexion and dark, coarse hair. Faces Medspa, however, offers a variety of laser types to treat a variety of skin types and complexions, including those with darker skin tones. So anyone can see great results.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal is permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. It's not uncommon for patients to require maintenance treatments once a year, even after the area has been fully treated. The reason: The laser targets and destroys your current hair follicles, but new follicles can develop thanks to hormonal changes or shifts in weight.

What are popular laser hair removal treatment areas?

The most popular areas for women are the face, armpit, and bikini line. For men, the back and the neck are the most popular. Treating the lower half of the neck in men eliminates the need to shave in this area, which is more difficult to shave and often results in razor burn, nicks, and ingrown hairs.

How is laser hair removal different from electrolysis hair removal?

Laser Hair Removal is much faster than electrolysis. Electrolysis hair removal requires more time because it only treats one hair at a time, while Laser Hair Removal treats many hairs with every laser pulse. With Laser Hair Removal, for example, a small area like the underarms can be treated in only twenty minutes.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal involves using pulses of laser light to destroy hair follicles in unwanted parts of your body. For women, this may be the back, face, legs and pubic area. For men, this may be the chest, stomach and underarms. One of the most incredible benefits of this hair removal method is it’s effective on nearly every region of the body.

What can I expect from my laser hair removal treatment?

For most patients, Diode Laser Hair Removal treatment sessions only take between ten and fifteen minutes to complete. After each treatment session, you may see a 10-15% decrease in hair follicles. Typically, total hair removal will require between six and twelve sessions, which should be scheduled between four and eight weeks apart. Some patients may experience redness or sensitivity in the treatment area, which subsides within a few hours. Following your laser hair removal treatment, most patients are able to return to work, school, or other normal routine activities right away. Following completion of treatment, there may be some smaller hairs that remain and are resistant to treatment, however the vast majority of hair is permanently removed.
